Last year, the FOGG Playhouse started a wonderful new tradition: an annual fundraiser at a true San Francisco institution, Original Joe’s.  Because this family-owned restaurant embodies the same commitment to community as FOGG, we thought we would take a moment highlight why we think this local restaurant is so special.

Many in the FOGG community are probably familiar with O.J.’s huge portions of pasta, chicken parmesan, and the “Joe’s Special”—not to mention its notorious cocktails—because its original location on Taylor Street made it the perfect spot for pre- and post-theatre meals.  What many of you may not know is that O.J.’s was in that location on Taylor Street since it opened in OriginalJoesthe 1930’s!  In fact, O.J.’s opened the same year the Golden Gate Bridge was completed, and both are celebrating their 80thanniversary this year.  And O.J.’s has been a family-owned restaurant (now on its third generation!) ever since.  Our very own SF Original Joe’s really is the “Original”; all of the other Joe’s have copied its concept and aesthetic, including the leather booths, exhibition kitchen, and Italian-American menu.

original-joe-sWhen a devastating fire destroyed O.J.’s original location on Taylor Street in 2007, the undeterred owners remained committed to keeping the family business open to serve the community.  In 2012, O.J.’s reopened on the corner of Union and Stockton across from Washington Square in North Beach.  We hope that you will join us at O.J.’s in North Beach this February for our second-annual Fogg Playhouse fundraiser.

The Original Joe’s FOGG Playhouse fundraiser is just one way you can support FOGG.  Today is Giving Tuesday, a day dedicated to charitable giving.  What better way to demonstrate your commitment to your community than making a donation to FOGG Theatre?  #C2C
